How to get more plumbing leads without paying a directory for every one
Where plumbing and heating work actually comes from, why emergency searches matter more than any other trade, and how to stop renting leads from Checkatrade.
Short answerPlumbers win or lose on the emergency search. Be the one who shows up for "emergency plumber" in your town with a number that can be tapped, get reviews after every boiler, and use directories as a bridge, not a home.
The emergency search is your whole trade in one moment
Someone has water coming through the ceiling. They pick up their phone, type “emergency plumber” and the town, and call the first number they can tap. No comparison, no reviews read, no quote. That search happens every day in every town you cover, and it is worth more than any advert because the person is not shopping, they are panicking. Winning it needs three things: a page for emergency work that names your towns, a phone number at the top of that page as a real tap-to-call link, and a site that loads in about a second on a poor signal.
Planned work is a different search
Boiler replacements, bathrooms, landlord certificates. These are researched. People read reviews, compare two or three plumbers, and want a sense of price. For this work the page needs your Gas Safe number where they can see it, real photos of finished bathrooms and installs, reviews on the page, and a way to send a photo of the job, which is why a WhatsApp button converts better than a form for plumbers.
Directories: use them, do not depend on them
Checkatrade and MyBuilder bring leads to a new plumber quickly. They also send each lead to several plumbers, charge whether you win or not, and keep your reviews on their site. The pattern that works is to use them for your first year while your own site and profile build up, then watch the ratio. When your own enquiries pass the directory leads, cut the directory or keep it as a top-up.
Reviews decide the map
For “plumber near me”, the map at the top is decided mostly by recent reviews. Ask after every job, the same day, by text, with the direct link. Reply to each one. One or two a week beats a burst. A plumber with forty recent reviews outranks one with two hundred old ones.
Villages are cheaper than towns
“Plumber Guildford” is fought over. “Plumber Shalford” is not. A page for each village you cover, written properly, ranks in weeks and brings the kind of customer who wants a local name rather than a list. Most plumbers never build them.
The van and the invoice
Your van is seen more than your website. Put the town and the website address on it, large. Put the review link on every invoice. Both cost almost nothing and both feed the two channels that matter.
A one-month plan
Week one: Google Business Profile complete, service area set to your towns, ten review requests to recent customers. Week two: an emergency page and a boiler page on your site, phone number at the top. Week three: pages for your three busiest villages. Week four: WhatsApp button on every page, and a look at Search Console to see what is already appearing. Or have it built: this is exactly what a plumber’s site from us includes, and we build a free demo first.
Where this leads
See what a site built for plumbers includes on our websites for plumbers page, or ask for a free demo. We build it from your real business before you pay anything, and it goes live in five days if you like it.
